MIDWEST OPEN TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIP
Decatur,
IL -- November 17, 2007
Duque Institute of Martial Arts Brings Home "Top School" Honors
Twenty-nine students, ranging in age from 4 to 40, from the Duque Institute of Martial Arts competed at Master
Joshua Sharp's Midwest Open TaeKwonDo Championship in Decatur on November 17, 2007. Over twenty-five different Martial Arts
Schools brought more than 350 competitors from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial Art known for its explosive kicks. The tournament
invited martial artists to compete in four different aspects of Martial Arts: forms and sparring on Saturday, breaking and
weapons on Sunday. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, students "turn it up" during workouts, come in
for extra practice, and work very hard to master their techniques. Participating in tournaments is a positive experience for
students, even if they don't win. They are taught wonderful life lessons such as: practice makes perfect, how to conquer your
nerves and perform under pressure, displaying good sportsmanship (as sparring competitors are deducted points for not following
strict rules), and being a gracious winner/loser. Many students have an "Aha" moment, finally understanding Master Duque's
instruction or strategy. Forms has always been a strong category for DIMA. A form is a series of 20 to over 50
movements that get increasingly more difficult at each new level. To perform a winning form, a student must dedicate many
hours of practice to refine their technique, speed, and intensity. Extra focus and concentration is required in the tournament
ring because of all of the distractions of other rings, spectators, and judges. After competing in specific categories divided
by sex, age, and rank, the winners are then invited to compete for Grand Champion. Eleven DIMA students were invited to compete
for Grand Champion honors, with two, Cory Lundy (White/Yellow/Orange Belt Adults) and Kim Stevens (Red/Brown Belt Adults)
placing first and taking home six-foot trophies. Jenica Sullivan, who participated in her first tournament,
marveled at the intensity of the forms competition. All the hours of extra practice and analyzing each technique paid off.
She got butterflies in her stomach, but was able to overcome her nerves and win her category. For many of DIMA's
students, this was their first Sparring Tournament. Tae Kwon Do Sparring is an Olympic sport where competitors don protective
gear and use primarily kicking techniques to score points. At this level of competition, each match has two rounds of one
minute each. Although one minute might seem like a very short period of time, competitors finish exhausted and drenched in
perspiration. And, they might have to spar two or three matches! Overall, DIMA brought home "Top School"
honors. Students earned the following trophies:
FORMS/POOMSE WHITE/YELLOW/ORANGE
3 & 4 year olds: Andrew Dresen (2nd place); 5 & 6 year olds: RJ Cherry (3rd

RIVERFEST - 7/29/2007
DIMA DEMO TEAMS PERFORM AT RIVERFEST
The DIMA Demo Teams did a fantastic job again this year entertaining a
large Washington Park crowd. We feel incredibly proud of all of our students. They really put their hearts into showing their
absolute best.
The Little Ninjas followed Master Duque's commands to show kicks, blocks,
and punches with great energy! Then the Little Ninjas Forms Team performed a basic and more advanced Tae Kwon Do
form with music.
Next came the Ladies Fan Demo Team. Although the weather was hot, many members of the crowd said that the
performance gave them the chills. It was absolutely breathtaking.
Finally, the TKD 2007 Demo Team finished the show with a great routine.
They showed mastery of the form Toi-Gye, a form meant for students preparing for black belt. It took a lot of practice and
dedication to learn this form, but the diligence paid off. It looked absolutely great! Their board breaking and high kicks
were very exciting and the crowd reacted with great enthusiasm.
Congratulations to everyone!

EASTER SEALS TELETHON - 4/21/2007
DIMA PRESENTS CHECK AT TELETHON
DIMA students presented a check for $548.00 at the Easter Seals Telethon
on April 21, 2007. A video showcasing DIMA's Family TKD Class was shown following the check presentation. It was a wonderful
project for our students that we will repeat next year.
EASTER SEALS FUNDRAISER - 3/24/2007
DIMA COMMUNITY RAISES MONEY FOR EASTER SEALS
The DIMA community came together to raise money for the Easter Seals Telethon.
Our Movie & Board Breaking Night was a huge success. Over 100 people attended the event - current students brought friends
and expanded our Martial Arts Family. We had a lot of fun, and it was an opportunity for our students to demonstrate
Black Belt Spirit - by breaking boards for children with disabilities. Our students look forward to presenting the check
at the Telethon on April 21, 2007.
DIMA EXPANSION COMPLETED! - 3/12/2007
DIMA ADDS SECOND CLASSROOM, EXPANDS SCHEDULE
Due to our ever-growing student population, DIMA now has two
classrooms. Our expanded schedule allows for an additional Little Ninjas class, and more class time for beginners. The
new dojang has a "floating floor" - perfect for absorbing the impact of Hapkido falls and throws. See new schedule.
BLUE & GOLD BANQUET - 2/3/2007
DIMA STUDENTS AT CUB SCOUTS BLUE & GOLD
Master Duque was very pleased to celebrate the "crossing over" of DIMA
students from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts at the Blue & Gold dinner. After being introduced as an Eagle Scout from Santiago,
Chile, Master Duque gave the troop a bandana with Chile's official Boy Scout colors. It was a very special moment for all
who attended.

to participate in the Forms Clinic 2006. Grandmaster Shin, and his instructors Master Duvall and Master Ecker, worked on perfecting
students' techniques in Mu Duk Kwan, ITF, and WTF forms. The all day clinic finished with Black Belt Testing and a celebration

RIVERFEST - 7/30/2006
DIMA DEMO TEAMS PERFORM AT RIVERFEST
The Duque Institute of Martial Arts performed on the Jackson Street Stage
on July 30, 2006 with three Demo Teams. The weather was HOT - about 103F - but our students battled through
the heat, hot mats, and blazing sun to put on a GREAT show. The Little Ninjas started us off by showing kicks,
blocks, punches, and forms with great technique and enthusiasm. Next came the Hapkido demo. Their swords were swift, the throws
were high, and the crowd reaction was great. The TKD Demo Team finished the show with a choreographed routine of forms, dance,
board breaking, and flying kicks that made hanging out in the heat well worth it. We hope to repeat the performance next year
- let's just hope for cooler weather.
